Welcome to Oak Hill (OH) Summer Youth Program (SYP)

A three-week English as Second Language (ESL) course combined with an internationally recognized Destination Imagination (DI) program to be attended by both American English speakers and ESL students is offered by Oak Hill School, Eugene, Oregon in partnership with The University of Oregon (UO) Youth Enrichment and Talented & Gifted Program (YETAG) in the UO campus from July 20, 2008.

Destination ImagiNation Program is a process-based program grounded in sound creative problem solving theory that helps young people build lifelong skills in creative and critical thinking, teamwork, time management and problem solving.  You will learn and apply creative problem solving tools, discover your talents, and build an unbeatable team with your friends as you respond to challenges and produce creative and crazy solutions to unique problems that might take five minutes or two weeks!  Your team may be asked:

Build a vehicle!

Write, produce and star in a skit!

Design and test a weight-bearing structure!

Or move a ping pong ball into a bucket on the other side of the room, using an envelope, a straw and a paper plate!

OH SYP includes tours of San Francisco Bay, California and Portland, Oregon as well as Eugene, Oregon.  There are world class major universities in those visiting cities such as Stanford University, University of California at San Francisco, University of California at Berkeley, Oregon Health Science University as well as The University of Oregon.  You will visit all of the universities and see major tourist attractions in those areas such as Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, NASA Ames Research Center, Columbia Gorge, and beautiful Oregon Coast.  Also you will be amazed to see how beautiful place you will be living during the program.

You can have a lifetime experience this summer by attending OH SYP.  It is like catching many birds with one stone; ESL, DI, tours of three of the most beautiful cities in the world, college campus experience with American domestic students and middle/high school experience at Oak Hill. 

OH SYP is open for enthusiastic learners all over the world between 11 and 16 years old. The program is especially designed to maximize learning in a boarding school setting.  The international nature of the program will guide participants to broaden their horizons of viewing the world and stimulate them to become a global citizen.  Summer fun excursions like educational and cultural tours, biking, hiking, beach combing, concert going,  and parties with American domestic students are integral part of the program.

Eugene is the second largest metropolitan area between Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California.  Portland, Oregon is the largest one about two hours away by car to the north of Eugene.  Eugene is known as the jewel of the Pacific Northwest with its beautiful natural setting, one hour away to the Pacific Ocean and one hour to the Cascade Mountains dotted with snow capped peaks all year around.  It is a haven of summer activities in arts and outdoor sports with a mild climate with plenty of sunshine.  Eugene boasts major institutions of education and culture, and environment friendly industries. Austin, Texas, was runner up and Portland, Oregon, came third.
