Position Title: Lower School Educational Assistant

Curriculum Areas: All content areas

Grades: Prekindergarten-2nd grade

Location:Oak Hill School, Eugene, OR

Schedule: Monday – Friday, on days school is in session. Part-time mornings and fulltime.

Reports to: Director of Lower School

Appointment Type: Salaried, half-time annual academic year only 10-month appointment. Salaried, full-time annual academic year only 10-month appointment.

Major Position Responsibilities

During school hours, under occasional supervision, performs specialized work by assisting teacher in instruction and directing the activities of students in classroom to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment. Assists school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested. Reports to the classroom teacher as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with school students at school arrival and departure times.
  • Assists students with exercises and class activities; concentrates efforts with small groups of students and individuals, as necessary.
  • Compiles, prepares, and organizes materials and classroom for instructions and classroom activities.
  • Assists in cleaning and storing of materials after completion of activities.
  • Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Models proper behavior and play.
  • Assists teacher by recording daily attendance, recording student work as requested, substituting as needed, setting up special projects, escorting children to other areas of the school, monitoring student behavior, packing / unpacking student communication folders, running errands, etc.
  • Supervises and assists students when arriving and departing, during class, on field trips, during lunch/recess and on school grounds.
  • Assists individual children with special needs and/or in need of special attention.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in special programs or projects as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom.
  • Attends staff meetings as required; participates in in-service training programs.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in early childhood education curriculum and instruction.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the classroom teacher, other teachers, other school staff, administrative staff, students, parents, volunteers and the general public.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, preparing notices and mail, etc.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Requires Associate’s degree or an equivalent to the satisfactory completion of two years of college education.
  • Experience working with young children in the classroom or in a childcare setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Applicant must have current, insurable Oregon driver’s license, be able to pass a background check and must be able to secure current first aid certification.

Working Environment:

May be required to supervise outside activities in inclement weather.

This position must speak, read, write and communicate clearly in the English language.

The job requires frequent sitting, walking and standing and applicants must be able to lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

This position is required to work on-site; the duties of the position cannot be fully completed via remote.
