Physical Education Teacher

Position Description: Physical Education teacher, part-time

Grades: 6th-8th

Location: Oak Hill School, Eugene, Oregon

Schedule:  Part-time, .50 FTE, 10 month appointment (20 hours per week)

Reports to: Director of Faculty & Curriculum

Oak Hill School seeks a dynamic and talented faculty member who will promote the curiosity and exploration of physical movement while fostering an appreciation of lifelong fitness. The successful candidate will be able to incorporate techniques and strategies that grow the social and emotional learning of students while also teaching physical education. The ideal candidate will be able to work collaboratively and positively in tandem with other physical education and coaching professionals to continue to advance Oak Hill’s physical education and athletics program.

The ideal faculty member will create a rich learning environment, employ varied teaching approaches, and use multiple tools to engage a broad age group of students. Energetic enthusiasm for physical movement, education, athletics, and school sports programs is essential.

Position Duties and Responsibilities: 

● Design, manage and develop a dynamic and engaging PE curriculum for grades 6-8 designed to support physical fitness, sports playing and guide students toward an active and healthy lifestyle. The curriculum may include a Health component.

● Effectively oversee the learning environment to ensure students can learn safely, effectively, feel included and empowered regardless of skill level.

● Provide students constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback.

● Evaluate student learning success and adjust program activities as appropriate.

● Strive to increase teaching effectiveness through the application of appropriate teaching and learning strategies; evaluate student learning and modify instructional methods and strategies as appropriate to meet diverse student needs.

● Meet classes as scheduled; notify appropriate faculty in advance if absent, and arrange for a substitute instructor or assignments for class.

● Be accessible to students through technology or scheduled office hours, including arranging time for appointments.

● Prepare and distribute syllabi in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.

  • Maintain accurate and current records of students' academic standing promptly providing final grades, attendance, and other information as required by administration. 
  • Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or releasing such information except within recognized limits.
  • Evaluate  students solely based on performance and respond promptly to student or parent grade questions.
  • Create and revise, develop and update, where appropriate, program curricula.
  • Supervise students, ensuring a safe and healthy environment in the classroom and other areas of campus.

  • Participation in nonacademic activities including but not limited to study halls, dances, class trips, etc. 

Education and Experience Required:

  • BA/BS Degree in Physical Education, Health, or related field.
  • Proven knowledge and expertise to effectively perform teaching duties including but not limited to the following areas: Physical Education, Sports Science, Health.
  • A positive attitude, excellent collaborative verbal skills, strong organizational skills and proven success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation, and collegiality.
  • A willingness to collaborate and engage in dialogue about instructional practices with peers, and an interest in participating at a schoolwide level in activities is essential.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to set up, take down, and manipulate a variety of physical education equipment. 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Physical fitness sufficient to demonstrate and model the full range of physical education activities.
  • Mobility sufficient to move around campus quickly relating to multiple working areas, grass fields, gym, baseball fields, etc.


 

Education and Experience

  • The successful candidate will hold at least a Bachelor’s in physical education, health, or related field. An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Proven knowledge and expertise to effectively perform teaching duties including but not limited to the following areas: Physical Education, Health, Sports Science
  • Minimum of 1-3 years teaching in a high school or college setting.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years coaching experience and willingness to coach a sport.
  • The successful candidate will also possess a positive attitude, excellent verbal skills, strong organizational skills and proven success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation and collegiality.
  • A willingness to collaborate and engage in dialogue about instructional practices with peers, and an interest in participating at a schoolwide level in activities is essential.
